A men's kimono jacket is one of the easiest Japanese pieces to wear, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Worn well it is a light, relaxed layer that does the job of an overshirt. Worn badly it looks like you left the house in a dressing gown. The difference is almost entirely what you put with it.
Start with what a kimono jacket is
A kimono is a full-length robe that wraps and belts. A kimono jacket keeps only the upper half of the idea: the straight body, the wide sleeves and the front that hangs open or crosses over. The one rule: only one loose layer on top
This is the mistake that turns a kimono jacket into a robe. The jacket is already wide through the body and sleeves. Put a loose shirt or another oversized layer under it and the whole top half becomes fabric. Wear it over something plain and closer fitting instead: a fitted tee, a tank or a thin knit.
What to wear underneath
- A plain tee is the default and never wrong. White, black or grey.
- A tank in summer, for the lightest version of the outfit.
- A fine knit when it turns cooler, as long as it is close to the body.
Avoid graphics under it. The jacket's shape is the detail, and a print competes with it.
Which trousers work
Because the top is loose, the trousers can go either way. Wide-leg trousers and Japanese pants give one continuous relaxed silhouette, which is the most natural pairing. Relaxed denim or straight trousers give a more Western read and are the easier start if you have never worn the piece. In summer it works over shorts. What does not work is a very slim trouser, which makes the top look even bigger.
Open front or crossover
