Cut from the body outward

Cut from the body outward

Japanese pattern cutting starts from the cloth and the movement, not from a fitted block that then gets loosened. The rise drops, the seat carries volume, and the leg is drafted to fall instead of tracing the thigh.

The practical result is range. These sit comfortably cross-legged, on a bike, or squatting, where a fitted Western trouser fights you.

Where the shape comes from

The dropped rise and the wide leg trace back to hakama pants, the pleated trousers worn under a haori jacket in traditional Japanese dress, and to the loose work trousers still standard on Japanese building sites. The line survived because it works.

Nobody here is selling a martial arts costume. This is everyday wear, and the same silhouette now spans a wide range of Japanese design, from tailoring to streetwear.

The eleven, by name

Sekino, Kotona, Kireina, Miyabi, Shinbo, Gelyu, Pokku, Sokai, Igen and Yasumi. Garment length at size M runs 90 cm on the Sekino to 103 cm on the Yasumi, and the Kotona is cropped with a 72 cm cuff and a 120 cm hip.

Fabrics cover 100% cotton, 100% linen, a 65% cotton linen blend, an 80% cotton denim and 100% premium cotton corduroy. Waist at size M runs 68 cm to 86.7 cm. Sizes reach XS to 5XL, among the deepest in the store. All 11 carry a full size chart with a recommended height band. Wash cold, line dry.

Pure linen and corduroy

For the dropped-rise cut on its own see harem pants, and for the corduroy see corduroy pants.

For pure linen see 100% linen pants and linen pants. See pants for the whole range.

Measurements come from the manufacturer's flat size table for each garment, converted to centimetres and mapped onto one size ladder. Available for 11 of the 11 garments here, last checked 2026-09-12. How we measure.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a trouser Japanese cut?

A lower rise, volume through the seat, and a leg drafted to fall instead of tracing the thigh. The pattern starts from movement, not from a fitted block.

What sizes do these reach?

XS to 5XL across the group, among the deepest anywhere in the store. Every pair carries a full size chart.

How long are they?

Garment length at size M runs 90 cm on the Sekino to 103 cm on the Yasumi. The Kotona is deliberately cropped above the ankle.

How do I pick a size?

Each chart carries a recommended height band alongside the flat measurements, so match your height first and check the waist second.
