Wale is what you are choosing

Wale is what you are choosing

Wale count decides how corduroy reads, and it is the thing most listings leave out. Wale counts the ridges per inch. A low count gives fat ribs and a heavy workwear look. A high count gives fine ribs closer to velvet.

Corduroy also has a nap. Run your hand up the ribs and it darkens, run it down and it lightens, so a pair looks like two different colors depending on the light.

The Miyabi, measured

The published chart lists laid-flat halves, so the numbers double for circumference. At size M the waist is 34 cm flat, so 68 cm around, and the hip is 53 cm flat. Leg opening is 19 cm flat, so 38 cm around, and the garment runs 98 cm long.

The chart also carries a recommended height of 165 cm to 170 cm and weight of 50 kg to 60 kg for size M. Fabric is 100% premium cotton corduroy in a relaxed straight fit. Sizes reach M to 3XL in three colors. Cold wash. Dry flat or on a hanger.

Frequently asked questions

What does wale mean in corduroy?

The number of ribs per inch. Fewer, fatter ribs read as workwear. More, finer ribs read closer to velvet and dress cleaner.

What are the measurements?

At size M the waist is 34 cm laid flat, so 68 cm around, and the leg runs 98 cm long with a 19 cm flat opening.

Why does the color look different from different angles?

Corduroy has a nap. The ribs catch light one way and absorb it the other, so the same pair reads darker or lighter as you move.

How should I wash corduroy?

Wash cold, turn them inside out, and hang dry. A hot tumble crushes the pile flat and the ribs never fully lift again.
