Hem width does most of the work

Hem width is the number that changes a trouser most, and it is the one nobody prints on the label. Leg openings at size M run from 25 cm on the Fleece-Lined Sweatpants to 68 cm on the Outdoor Stretch Quick-Dry Shorts. Forty-three centimeters separates them. Same size letter, different garment.

Waist at M sits between 58 cm and 86.7 cm across the range. Length runs 36 cm to 109 cm. Read those two figures before the letter on the tag.

What is in here

Pants make up most of it, then shorts, then jeans. Cotton carries the Japanese-named pieces, linen runs through the Yasumi and Igen, and two cargos are 100% nylon for heat. The pleated suit, pinstripe and belted drape trousers add a tailored end in polyester suiting. Sizes reach XXS to 3XL, and a few pairs use a 28 to 36 waist instead.

42 of the 48 carry a full size chart. Shoots use a 187 cm model or taller with the size worn recorded. Wash cold, and hang dry anything with linen in it.

By length, cut and fabric

By length: pants or shorts. By cut: wide-leg pants, straight-leg pants and cargo pants.

By fabric: linen pants, corduroy pants and quick-dry pants. Denim sits on its own in jeans.
