Gauge decides warmth per gram

Gauge decides warmth per gram

Knit gauge decides warmth per gram, and it is the number nobody lists. Gauge counts stitches per inch. A low gauge is a chunky knit with big air pockets, warm for its weight and prone to snagging. A high gauge is fine and smooth, less warm, and it layers under a jacket without bulk.

Fiber then decides how long that structure survives. Acrylic and polyester hold shape and pill. Natural fibers breathe better and stretch out.

Gauge, fiber and cut

The Half Zip Sweater Knit is the widest at 130 cm across the chest and the shortest at 61 cm. Wide and short is the classic layering ratio. The Short Sleeve Knit Sweater sits at 110 cm with a 44 cm shoulder and a 27 cm sleeve, cut to wear on its own in shoulder season.

Fabrics run 71% polyester with 18% acrylic and 11% nylon, a viscose-blend knit, and a 99% polyester with 1% spandex on the Italian knit cotton polo that files here too. All three carry a full size chart, sizes run S to XL, and shoots use a 188 cm model or taller. Wash cold and lay flat to dry.

Looped-back fabric and collars

For looped-back sweat fabric instead of knit see sweatshirts and hoodies.

For the collar version see polos. The whole upper half is tops.

Measurements come from the manufacturer's flat size table for each garment, converted to centimetres and mapped onto one size ladder. Available for 3 of the 3 garments here, last checked 2026-09-12. How we measure.

Frequently asked questions

What is knit gauge?

Stitches per inch. A low gauge is chunky, warm for its weight and snags easily. A high gauge is fine, smooth and layers under a jacket.

Why do knits pill?

Short fibers work loose and tangle at friction points. Acrylic and polyester pill more than long-staple natural fiber, but they hold shape better.

How should I dry a sweater?

Lay it flat. Hanging a wet knit stretches the shoulders permanently because the whole weight of the water hangs off two points.

Which one works on its own?

The Short Sleeve Knit Sweater at 110 cm chest and a 27 cm sleeve. The half-zip is cut short and wide for layering over something.
