A haori is a hip or thigh-length jacket traditionally worn over a kimono. It began as men's wear and became part of formal dress, the formal version carrying family crests. Unlike a kimono it is not wrapped and belted. It hangs open at the front, traditionally held by a pair of cords, and its job is to finish an outfit rather than hold it together.
That is exactly why it translates. Take the kimono away and a haori is a light, straight jacket that goes over anything.
The two here

How to wear a haori
Over a plain tee and Japanese pants it reads as intended. Over a shirt and straight trousers it replaces a light blazer. Keep what is underneath simple, because the haori is the shape.
Caring for it
Both machine wash cold without bleach. The kendo haori washes with like colours and can hang dry or tumble dry low; the reversible jacket takes a gentle cycle and irons best while slightly damp.
