Where tabi come from
Tabi are Japanese socks split between the big toe and the rest. They have been worn for centuries with zori and geta, because the split lets the thong of the sandal sit between the toes.
Many people now wear them without sandals too, at home, in tabi shoes, or for yoga and martial arts, where the separate big toe gives a firmer feel of the floor.
How they are made
These are knitted to mid calf, with the big toe in its own pocket and a reinforced seam at the split, the point that wears first on any sock with a toe division.
A ribbed cuff holds them up without digging in.
