Plus Size Aladdin Pants: How to Find Harem Pants That Fit

Plus size aladdin pants are harem pants with a stretchy waistband, a dropped crotch and gathered ankles, cut with room for fuller hips and thighs. Buy by your hip measurement first and the rise second, because the waistband stretches and the hip does not. Our harem pants collection runs up to 5XL in several cuts.

What plus size aladdin pants are

Aladdin pants and harem pants are the same garment under two names. The name points to the baggy trousers worn by the Aladdin character in storybook illustrations, stage pantomimes and the 1992 Disney film. Shops use both names, and the French call the same cut sarouel.

The shape has three parts: a soft waistband, extra cloth through the seat that drops the crotch below where regular trousers sit, and legs that narrow into a cuff or elastic at the ankle. That extra cloth is why the style suits bigger bodies. Nothing presses on the hips or thighs, and the pants hang rather than grip.

The catch is that a plus size label on harem pants tells you very little. A one-size pair may claim to fit up to 2XL because the waist stretches, while the hip and thigh stay the same width. That gap is where most bad fits start.

Harem pants plus size: what to check before you buy

  • Hip width. The waistband stretches. The hip, measured across the seat, does not. Look for a chart hip measurement at least 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) bigger than your own hips, so the cloth can still fall in folds.
  • Rise and drop. The rise is the distance from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband. On fuller thighs a very deep drop puts a bundle of cloth between the knees that rubs as you walk. A moderate drop, sitting around the upper thigh, is easier to live in.
  • Waistband build. A wide elastic band holds better than a narrow one and is less likely to roll under a belly. A drawstring on top of the elastic lets you fine-tune it.
  • Ankle cuff. If your calves are wide, a tight knit cuff will ride up and pinch. A looser elastic hem or an open leg is more comfortable.
  • Fabric weight. Thin, slippery cloth drapes close and can cling where it touches. Crisper, heavier cloth stands away from the body and never clings, but it adds visible volume. Neither is wrong. It depends on whether you want flow or structure.

How to measure for plus size aladdin pants

Letter sizes are not reliable across brands, and pieces cut for Asian markets are often labeled one or two sizes smaller than US clothing. Measure once and compare numbers instead.

  1. Measure your waist where you want the band to sit, which for harem pants is usually at or just below the navel.
  2. Measure your hips around the fullest part of the seat, with the tape level and snug but not tight.
  3. Lay a pair of loose pants you already like flat. Measure across the hip and down the rise.
  4. Measure the inseam on the same pair. If you are unsure where it runs, our guide on where the inseam is on pants takes ten seconds, and the outseam guide covers the outside length.
  5. Compare with the product chart. Flat chart measurements are half the circumference, so double them before you compare with your body.

When your waist and hip point to different sizes, go with the hip. The elastic takes care of the waist.

Length is more forgiving than it looks. Aladdin pants are meant to bunch a little above the ankle cuff, so an extra inch or two disappears. Too short is the real problem, because the cuff then sits on the calf.

Aladdin pants cuts compared for fuller bodies

Cut Where the volume sits How it wears on a plus size frame Watch for
Deep drop crotch Between the knees Very loose through hip and thigh, the boldest look Rubbing between the legs, a shorter-looking leg
Moderate drop, cuffed ankle Seat and upper thigh The easiest everyday version, room where you need it Cuffs that are tight on wide calves
Tapered, low drop Hip, narrowing from the knee Closest to a jogger, neat under a longer top Too little thigh room if sized by waist
Wide, open leg Evenly down the leg Falls straight and skims, no gathering at the ankle Can swamp a shorter frame

If you are torn between a harem pant and a jogger, the difference is mostly where the extra room goes, which we break down in harem pants vs joggers. For why the rise decides so much, see what baggy pants actually mean.

Styling plus size harem pants

Balance the volume with a top that has some shape. A straight tee loosely tucked at the front, or a boxy shirt that ends at the hip, keeps the outline clear. A long loose tunic over long loose pants tends to read as one block. Slim, low shoes show the ankle cuff and keep the leg from looking heavy.
