Black Genie Pants for Men: How They Fit and How to Wear Them

Black genie pants are harem pants under a more playful name: a low, roomy seat, full legs, and a hem that narrows or gathers at the ankle. In black, all that volume reads calmer. The folds look like shadow instead of costume, which is why most men buy their first pair in this color. At Amaji we carry six men's pairs that come in black, from $39.90 to $79.00, all in our harem pants collection.

Genie pants, harem pants, sarouel: one cut, several names

The genie name comes from the storybook picture of Aladdin's genie, all billowing trousers and bare chest. Shops use "genie pants", "harem pants", "Aladdin pants" and "sarouel" for the same drop-crotch shape, and a search for any of them turns up the same garments. The Wikipedia entry on harem pants covers the older loose trousers the shape grew out of. We wrote up the French name separately in our sarouel pants guide.

One thing genie pants are not: hakama (袴), the pleated Japanese trousers tied at the waist with long cords. Both are wide, but the volume sits in different places. Our page on hakama vs harem pants walks through the difference.

What separates a good pair of men's genie pants

Customers ask us the same few questions, and they all come back to four details.

  • How low the crotch drops. Mid-thigh is the everyday version. Knee level is a statement and changes how you walk up stairs.
  • What happens at the ankle. A gathered cuff gives the classic balloon shape. An open, tapered hem looks closer to a relaxed trouser.
  • The waist. An elastic or drawstring waist is normal for this cut, so the fit at your hips matters more than an exact waist number.
  • The black itself. Plain black hides the extra fabric in the seat. A heavy print on the same cut doubles the attention.

To be straight with you, harem pants are a quiet corner of our shop. The Shinbo pair was in 1 of our last 52 orders (90 days), and Amaji's Kireina Pants were in 1 of our last 52 orders (90 days) too. Most of our customers come for hakama. The men who do buy genie pants from us tend to know exactly what they want, and black is usually it.

The handkerchief skirt pair at Amaji is the odd one out. A pointed panel hangs over the legs, so it reads as avant-garde rather than relaxed. It only comes in black, which is the right call for a piece this busy.

How to wear genie pants: men's outfits that hold up

Keep the top shorter and closer to the body. A plain tee that ends at the hip, or a fitted tank, lets the shape of the pants do the talking. A long, oversized top on top of a drop crotch turns into one big sack.

Shoes decide the mood. Low sneakers keep it casual. Sandals push it toward summer and travel. If you like a Japanese touch, Amaji's Grey Tabi Socks at $12.90 sit nicely under a gathered ankle cuff.

Black on black is the easy outfit and the one we see most. If that feels too heavy, a white or gray top breaks it up without fighting the volume. More combinations are in how to wear Gelyu harem pants, and if you are deciding between this cut and sweats, read harem pants vs joggers.

Sizing a genie pant

Size by hips and waist first. The gathered or tapered ankle forgives a lot of extra length, so a pair that is a little long simply stacks at the cuff. Going a size down to make the pants look slimmer usually backfires, because the seat pulls and the drop sits in the wrong place.

Every product page has its own size table, and they are not identical across pairs. Our Shinbo size guide shows how to read one. Tall men should start with harem pants for tall men, and bigger guys with plus size harem pants.

When our pairs are the wrong answer

What we sell are affordable everyday pieces, made in China, cut and sized for men. If you need thin stretch pants for yoga or dance, bright festival prints, or a women's cut, look elsewhere. Those exist and do that job better. For a wider look at who sells what, see where to buy men's harem pants.

If you want a plain black genie pant you can wear to the shops, on a flight or around the house, that is exactly what the six pairs above are for.
