Short answer: a casual haori or kimono jacket costs about $20 to $80 online, and a traditional haori made for wear over a kimono costs $200 to $370 at a Japanese specialist. For everyday wear, buy an open-front cotton or linen cut sized S to XL and wear it over a plain tee.
We sell haori and kimono jackets, so this guide comes from a seller. It lists the other shops worth checking, with the prices on their own pages on 29 September 2026.

Haori, kimono jacket or noragi?
| What it is | How it closes | |
|---|---|---|
| Haori | A hip or thigh-length jacket worn over a kimono | Open, or a short cord at the chest |
| Kimono jacket | The English name for a loose, wide-sleeved jacket cut like a haori | Usually open |
| Noragi | A farmer's work jacket in cotton or hemp | Crosses over and ties shut |
If you want it to hang open over a tee, pick a haori or kimono jacket. If you want it closed like an overshirt, pick a noragi.
For the traditional lower half, look at hakama trousers, the pleated wide-leg cut worn under a haori.

How to wear one casually
- Keep the rest plain. A white or black tee and straight or wide trousers let the jacket do the work.
- Wear it open. A haori is cut to hang open. If you want it closed, buy a noragi instead.
- Check the sleeve. Most casual haori have wide three-quarter sleeves. If you want full length, look for it on the size chart.
- Fabric by season. Linen and thin cotton for summer, heavier cotton or quilted haori for autumn.
The haori jacket guide covers the history, and what is a noragi jacket explains the work-jacket cousin.
