Quick-dry shirts that stop feeling quick-dry usually have the same problem: the fabric is still moving moisture, but the surface has picked up residue that blocks it.
What technical fabric care is trying to protect
Most performance tops and lightweight layers use synthetic fibres such as polyester, nylon, or blends with spandex. These fibres are smooth, strong, and low-absorbency. That is useful because sweat is meant to spread across the fabric surface and evaporate instead of soaking into the yarn the way it does in cotton.
That structure is also why these fabrics need different care. The fabric itself may not shrink much, but heat, residue, and abrasion can change how the surface behaves. Once that happens, a shirt can feel clingy, smell sooner, dry more slowly, or stop moving moisture away from the skin as well.

Why fabric softener causes problems
Fabric softener leaves a thin coating on fibres. On cotton, that coating can make fabric feel softer. On synthetics, the coating can interfere with the very thing you bought the fabric for: capillary action and airflow through the weave or knit.
In practical terms, softener can:
- reduce wicking, so sweat spreads more slowly
- trap body oils and detergent residue, which can increase odour retention
- leave a slick film that changes the hand feel of the fabric
- make future washes less effective because residue builds up over time
Dryer sheets can cause a similar issue because they also deposit lubricant-like residues. For synthetics, skip both.
The wash temperature that works best
For most polyester, nylon, and spandex blends, cool to warm water is the safest range. A good default is around 30°C to 40°C. That is usually enough to remove sweat and everyday soil without stressing elastic fibres or encouraging unnecessary wear.
Hot water is not automatically wrong, but it is easier to damage performance finishes, accelerate elastic fatigue, and set in odour if the garment has already absorbed body oils. Very high heat can also distort some knits and shorten the life of spandex-containing pieces.
Cold water is fine for lightly worn items and is often enough if you wash promptly. If the garment has heavy sweat, sunscreen, or body oil, a warm wash is often more effective than a cold one.
How to deal with odour that keeps coming back
Retained odour is usually not just sweat. It is often a mix of body oil, bacteria, detergent residue, and any coating left behind by softener. Synthetic fibres are less absorbent than cotton, but they can hold onto oils on the surface, and those oils are what bacteria feed on.
To reduce odour without damaging the garment:
- wash soon after wearing instead of leaving damp clothes in a bag
- turn the item inside out so the skin side gets cleaner
- use a measured amount of liquid detergent, not extra
- avoid overdosing, which leaves residue in the knit
- if odour is persistent, do an occasional soak in cool water with detergent before washing
For very stubborn odour, an enzyme-based detergent can help break down sweat and body oils. Oxygen bleach can also help on colourfast garments, but always check the care label first. Chlorine bleach is not a good default for synthetics because it can weaken fibres and affect colour.
Washing technique matters as much as temperature
Technical fabrics usually do best with a gentle machine cycle. Strong agitation can abrade the fibres, especially in lighter knits and mesh-like constructions. Fast spins are usually acceptable, but a gentler cycle is enough for most everyday wear.
A few practical habits make a difference:
- wash similar fabrics together rather than with heavy denim or towels
- fasten zips and close hook-and-loop closures before washing
- use a laundry bag for thin tops, especially if they are worn under outer layers
- do not overload the drum, because poor water circulation leaves residue behind

Drying without damaging the fabric
Heat is the part of laundry that most often shortens the life of synthetics. High tumble-dryer heat can fatigue elastic, warp trims, and set in residue if the garment was not fully cleaned.
The safest approach is air drying. Hang or lay flat in a shaded, well-ventilated place. Direct sun is not always harmful, but repeated strong UV exposure can fade colour and age elastic over time.
If you use a dryer, choose low heat and remove the garment while it is still slightly damp. That reduces stress on the fibres and helps prevent overdrying. Never dry technical pieces on a hot cycle just to make them feel crisp faster.
How synthetics differ from cotton
Cotton behaves differently because it absorbs water into the fibre. That gives cotton a softer, sometimes more familiar feel, but it also means it stays wet longer and can feel heavy when sweaty. Synthetics usually dry faster because they hold less water inside the fibre structure.
That difference changes how you care for them. Cotton can tolerate more heat in some cases, and residue is less likely to block performance because cotton is not relying on wicking in the same way. Synthetics, by contrast, are more sensitive to coatings and heat because their performance depends on the surface staying clean and open.
