Volume is the point, not the size up

Volume is the point, not the size up

Baggy in the Japanese sense is a drafting decision, not a bigger size. The pattern adds room through the seat and thigh while the waist stays where it sits, so the fabric falls instead of straining. Buying a size up in a slim block gives you a loose waist and the same narrow leg; it does not give you this.

Across the ten pairs here the volume arrives differently. Shinbo and Gelyu drop the rise so the excess hangs below the seat. Kireina pleats at the waist and closes the ankle, so the shape is deliberate rather than loose. Kotona crops just above the ankle with a cuffed hem, and Sekino and the Japanese Wide Leg Trousers keep a wide leg cropped well clear of it.

For volume that comes from pleats instead, see the hakama trousers.

How it reads worn

Wide through the leg reads intentional when something else is fitted, which is why these sit better under a closer top than a long one. A cropped hem shows the shoe and keeps the proportion from swallowing you, and it is the easier place to start if you have not worn volume before.

Sizing on baggy cuts is read off the hip, not the waist. An elasticated or drawstring waist has a working range; the hip is fixed. Every pair here lists its outside length, never an inseam.

What the word baggy actually describes, and why the rise matters more than the width, is in what baggy pants mean. The dropped-rise pairs are also gathered in harem pants.

Domande frequenti

What are Japanese baggy pants?

Trousers drafted with deliberate volume through the seat and leg rather than simply cut in a larger size. The waist sits where it sits and the fabric falls away from the body, which is what separates them from an oversized version of a slim trouser.

Are baggy pants and harem pants the same thing?

Harem pants are one kind of baggy cut, defined by a dropped crotch that lets fabric hang below the seat. A wide-leg or balloon trouser is baggy without that drop. Both are in this collection.

How should baggy pants fit at the waist?

Read the hip measurement first and size to that. Most pairs here use an elastic or drawstring waist with a working range, so the waist adapts, but the hip figure is fixed.

Do these come cropped or full length?

Most of them crop. Kotona, Sekino and the Japanese Wide Leg Trousers finish above the ankle, Kireina and Gelyu close at the ankle with a cuff, and Shinbo stops just short of it. Each product page lists its outside length at every size.
