Japanese work pants, and what they are not
Japanese work trousers
Japan has three well-known work trousers. Tobi trousers are worn by the construction workers who work at height. They balloon from the hip to below the knee and narrow sharply at the calf to tuck into boots. Samue trousers are the loose drawstring work clothes of Zen monks. Monpe are loose farm trousers gathered at the ankle. What they share is room where you bend and nothing loose where it could catch.
Two pairs here take those shapes directly. The rest are practical cotton trousers built on the same priorities, room through the thigh and a hem kept out of the way.
Tobi and monpe
The Balloon Leg Tobi Trousers follow the scaffolder's cut. They run full through the thigh and knee, then gather in at the ankle, with buttons down the legs. The fabric is 80% polyester and 20% cotton. They come in one size, with a drawstring waist that adjusts from 66 to 115 cm.
The Monpe Balloon Pants are the farm version. Pleats at an elastic waist, a leg that balloons, and an ankle that narrows. They are polyester and they run small, so check the waist range before you order.
The cotton pairs
The Deconstructed Cargo Work Pants are 100% cotton in a wrinkle-resistant, structured weave that holds its shape through a full day and resists bagging at the knee and seat. Front pleats add structure at the waist, slash pockets keep the front clean, and the rise sits mid.
The Cotton Wide-Leg Cargo Pants are the heavy pair, 100% cotton at 570 g with thigh cargo pockets and structured front pleats. The leg is relaxed and wide all the way down.
Kotona is loose without being a harem cut, in 100% cotton woven to a textured surface with some grip. The pockets open from the top rather than the side seam, so nothing falls out when you sit, and the cuffed hem crops just above the ankle. The drawstring waist genuinely adjusts.
Sekino is cut wide and straight and stops at the calf, the shortest trouser we carry, in 100% cotton with an elastic waist and drawstring. It is a hot weather trouser. Air keeps moving because the hem is nowhere near the ankle. The Japanese Wide Leg Trousers are a cropped wide leg in stretch cotton with a mid waist.
How to wear them
The cropped pairs show the ankle, so shoes matter. A low sneaker or sandal works. A heavy boot fights a cropped hem. The tobi and monpe gather at the ankle, so they sit on a boot the way they do on site. Keep the top half plain and closer fitting.
For the pleated traditional cut see hakama pants. For the dropped-rise cuts see Japanese harem pants, for more volume baggy pants, and for everything together Japanese trousers. The history of each shape is in where to buy Japanese work pants.
Sizing and care
Read the hip figure on each chart rather than the letter. The drawstring and elastic waists adjust but the hip does not. Every product page lists outside length, never an inseam. Each pair carries its own care guide. Kotona will not shrink at a cold wash.

Domande frequenti
What are Japanese work pants called?
The best known are tobi trousers, worn by construction workers who work at height, samue trousers worn by Zen monks for temple work, and monpe, loose farm trousers gathered at the ankle.
Do you sell tobi pants?
Yes. The Balloon Leg Tobi Trousers have the tobi shape, full through the thigh and knee and gathered at the ankle, in 80% polyester and 20% cotton, one size with a 66 to 115 cm drawstring waist. The Monpe Balloon Pants cover the farm version.
Which pairs are full length?
The Deconstructed Cargo Work Pants, the Cotton Wide-Leg Cargo Pants, the tobi and the monpe. Kotona and the Japanese Wide Leg Trousers are cropped, and Sekino stops at the calf.
How should they fit?
Size to the hip measurement on each chart. The drawstring and elastic waists adjust, but the hip is fixed. The monpe run small, so check the waist range first.
Are tobi pants the same as Japanese construction worker pants?
Yes. Tobi are the trousers Japanese construction workers and scaffolders wear, full through the thigh and narrow at the calf. In English they are also sold as Japanese work trousers or construction pants.
How long does delivery take?
Orders leave within 1 to 2 business days and usually arrive 5 to 9 business days after dispatch, with tracking. Shipping is free over $60, and returns are open for 30 days from delivery.
