What a dropped rise is for

Men's harem pants, sarouel and the dropped rise

Men's harem pants are defined by one thing: the rise is lowered, so fabric hangs below the seat instead of pulling tight across it. The hip and thigh never bind when you sit cross-legged, squat or ride a bike. Sarouel is the older name for the same garment, from the sirwal, and it is the word a lot of people search when they mean exactly these.

The trade is proportion. A dropped rise shortens the visible leg, so harem pants read best with the hem sitting at or above the ankle bone, and with something closer-fitting on top.

What makes them Japanese harem pants

The dropped rise is not Japanese in origin, but the way it is cut here borrows from Japanese trousers. Pleating at the waist gives the volume somewhere to start, and on Kireina and Gelyu the ankle is closed with a cuff, the same volume-above, control-below logic as the traditional work trousers. That is what separates a considered trouser from loungewear. For how they relate to the traditional pleated trouser, see hakama against harem pants.

The Japanese trouser that gets its room from pleats instead of a dropped crotch is the hakama. Compare the two in our hakama pants and in the men's sarouel pants guide.

The six cuts here

Sokai is the one to start with if you have never worn harem pants. It sits in the middle of the range in every direction, in a midweight 50% cotton and 50% linen, narrower through the hip than Shinbo and heavier than Kireina.

Shinbo carries the deepest hip in the collection and the widest size range, S to 5XL. The blend is 30% linen with no stretch, built for heat, and the leg finishes slightly short of the ankle so it sits above a low shoe.

Gelyu is the roomiest pleated cut, in a heavier cotton and linen blend at 65% cotton that holds the pleats open. Ribbed cuffs gather the volume at the ankle, which is also why it works on shorter frames.

Kireina is the lightest, at 32% linen. Pleats at the waist and elastic cuffs at the ankle keep the shape deliberate, and it starts at XXS, the one to reach for if the rest come up big.

Pokku is the only denim harem pant, in 80% cotton denim with a tapered leg and cuffs that roll. It reads much closer to a regular trouser than the linen cuts.

Open, cuffed or rolled at the ankle

The hem decides the silhouette more than the rise does. A closed ankle, the elastic cuff on Kireina or the ribbed cuff on Gelyu, gathers the volume and stops it cleanly, so you get the shape without a puddle of fabric over the shoe. Pokku's rolled cuff lets you choose where it sits. Shinbo finishes just short of the ankle and lets the fabric move.

Sizing harem pants

Read the hip, not the letter. Gelyu, Shinbo and Kireina have elasticated waists with real room to adjust, so the waist forgives in one direction while the hip does not. Pokku is denim with no give across the hip, so take its hip figure seriously. Ranges differ: Kireina runs XXS to 2XL, Sokai XS to 3XL, Shinbo S to 5XL, Gelyu and Pokku M to 5XL.

At size M the group runs 94 cm to 100 cm long, and every product page lists outside length rather than an inseam. The Shinbo size guide, harem pants for tall men and plus size harem pants cover the edge cases.

How to wear harem trousers for men

Keep the top half close. A plain tee or a fitted knit lets the trouser be the shape; layer something equally loose and the outfit turns into fabric. A low sneaker or sandal suits the shorter hems. Black harem pants are the easiest first pair, because from a distance they read as a dark trouser. How to wear Gelyu harem pants and Sokai outfits go further.

Washing them

Wash the linen blends cold and dry them on a hanger. Heat is what shrinks a cotton and linen blend, and it does not relax back out. Pokku's denim stiffens after a wash and loosens again within an hour of wearing.

Other Japanese cuts

For volume without the dropped rise see Japanese baggy pants and wide-leg pants. The whole family is in Japanese pants, and harem pants against joggers settles that comparison.

Domande frequenti

What are harem pants?

Trousers with a lowered rise, so fabric hangs below the seat instead of pulling across it. The hip and thigh stay free when you sit, squat or ride.

Is sarouel the same as harem pants?

Yes. Sarouel is the older name for the same garment, from the sirwal. Both describe the dropped-rise cut.

What makes these Japanese harem pants?

The cutting borrows from Japanese trousers: pleating at the waist, and on Kireina and Gelyu a closed ankle, so the volume reads deliberate rather than loose.

What size should I take?

Size to the hip measurement, not the letter. Ranges differ by pair: Kireina XXS to 2XL, Sokai XS to 3XL, Shinbo S to 5XL, Gelyu and Pokku M to 5XL.

Which harem pants are best for hot weather?

Kireina, the lightest at 32% linen, and Shinbo, a 30% linen blend with no stretch that moves air rather than holding it.

Which pair is the least baggy?

Pokku. The denim and tapered leg make it read much closer to a regular trouser. Sokai sits in the middle of the range if you want the shape without the full volume.

How do I wash them?

Wash the linen blends cold and hang dry, since heat shrinks a cotton and linen blend. Pokku's denim stiffens after a wash and loosens within an hour of wearing.

Are harem pants good for men?

Yes, when the top half stays close. Every pair here is a men's cut, sized from XXS to 5XL depending on the style, and the dropped rise keeps the hip free when you sit.

What do men wear with harem pants?

A plain tee or a fitted knit on top, and a low sneaker or sandal. Keep the hem at or above the ankle bone so the leg does not look short.
