Tobi cut: full balloon leg gathered at the ankle, front button line, drawstring waist.
Tobi trousers come from Japanese building sites. Scaffolders, the tobi-shoku, wore them full through the thigh and knee and gathered at the ankle. The volume let them climb and crouch, and the cuff kept the hem away from the steel.
Ours keep that shape. The hip measures 160 cm around and the thigh 94 cm, then the leg narrows to a 50 cm gathered cuff. A line of buttons runs down each leg. The waist is a drawstring.
Size
One size. The drawstring waist adjusts from 66 to 115 cm. The length is 90 cm with a 44 cm rise, so the cuff sits at or just above the ankle on most heights. Our model is 188 cm.
Fabric and care
The cloth is 80% polyester and 20% cotton. It holds the balloon shape and does not crease much. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, or hand wash cold. Hang to dry.
How to wear them
Keep the top close to the body so the leg stays the focus. A black tee or a short jacket works. Split-toe tabi or a plain low shoe finish the line at the cuff.
The extra width was never decoration. On a scaffold, a full trouser leg brushes a beam or a pipe before your shin does, so a worker could feel his way along a narrow plank on an unfinished floor. The look outlived the job.
