What makes a kimono jacket
What is a men's kimono jacket?
A men's kimono jacket is a short, light jacket cut from the top half of a kimono: a straight body, wide sleeves and a front that crosses or hangs open, with no buttons. It is worn over a tee, the way an overshirt is. A kimono jacket is not a kimono, which is a full-length wrapped robe and still mostly formal wear in Japan. It sits between the haori, the open jacket traditionally worn over a kimono, and the noragi, the tied work jacket of Japanese farmers. Amaji sells thirty-one men's kimono jackets from £19, in printed, embroidered, denim and plain cotton versions, in sizes XXS to 2XL, with chest measurements of 118 to 148 cm and body lengths of 75 to 82 cm. Orders ship to 33 countries, free over $45 USD, with returns within 30 days of delivery.
A kimono jacket is not a kimono
A kimono is a full-length robe, wrapped and belted, and in Japan it is still largely formal wear. Its summer cotton version is the yukata, and yukata vs kimono sets out where the two differ. A men's kimono jacket takes only the upper half of that idea: the straight body, the wide sleeves and the front that crosses or hangs open. What you are left with is a light layer that goes over a tee the way an overshirt does, without any of the ceremony.
The shape sits between two other Japanese jackets. The haori jacket is the short layer traditionally worn over a kimono. The noragi is the tied work jacket of farmers. A kimono jacket borrows from both and belongs to neither, which is why it is the easiest of the three to wear with Western clothes. At the loudest end of the same wardrobe sits the embroidered satin sukajan.
Kimono jackets for men: open front, tied or wrapped
The thirty-one pieces here either hang open or close with a tie. None of them button. Kimono jacket styles come down to three closings: open, tied and wrapped.
Open front. The haori hang straight with nothing to fasten. The Modern Open-Front Cotton Haori and the Cotton Japanese Kimono Jacket are the entry pieces, at $42.90 and $43.90. The Summer Haori is a thin polyester weave for heat, and the Long Haori Coat falls well below the hip.
Tied. The Tied Kimono Cardigan is 98% cotton with riveted patch pockets. The Cross Collar Kimono Shirt fastens with a single tie inside the seam. The Crane Embroidered Kimono Jacket ties at the front, and the Reversible Textured Haori ties at the waist in a cotton and linen blend. The Washed Denim Kimono and the Wrap Front Kimono Style Jacket are the heavier cotton pieces. The Southwestern Jacquard Haori is the thickest cloth in the range.
Wrapped. The Kimono Coat is a lined, hip-length wrap cardigan. It ties at the side, with a shawl collar running down the crossover.
How to wear a kimono jacket
Treat it as the only loose thing on your top half. Over a plain tee or tank it reads clean; over another loose layer it turns into a robe. Underneath, it works with Japanese pants and wide-leg trousers, with shorts in summer, or with relaxed denim. Most pieces here are cut loose or relaxed, so there is room over a tee without sizing up.

Kimono jacket, haori, kimono cardigan or kimono coat
The same garment collects several names, and the kimono jacket men wear today answers to all of them. A kimono jacket for men is the short layer with a straight body and wide sleeves. A haori is the traditional version, worn open over a kimono. A kimono shirt is the crossover piece that fastens. People also call it a male kimono top. Kimono cardigan describes how the open ones are worn, loose over a tee. Kimono coat means something longer or heavier. Here that is the lined Kimono Coat and the Long Haori Coat, the two to look at for a men's kimono coat. The Tied Kimono Cardigan is the closest thing to a Japanese cardigan in the range, in 98% cotton. For a linen kimono jacket, the Reversible Textured Haori is a cotton and linen blend. A kimono outfit for men is simpler than it sounds: one of these over a plain tee, with Japanese pants or straight denim.
Choosing a mens kimono jacket
Every male kimono jacket here takes one of three shapes. The printed open-front kimono jackets are worn open over a tee. The wrap-front and denim kimono jackets close at the front. The kimono coat is a hip-length wrap cardigan that ties at the side. If you want a kimono coat for men, start with it or the tied kimono cardigan, which is 98% cotton. Most of the men kimono jacket range keeps the wide sleeve and the straight body, so it layers over a shirt without pulling.
Caring for it
The cotton pieces wash cold with like colours and should not be bleached. Check the label on the jacquard haori and the lined Kimono Coat first. Hang everything to dry to keep the shape, and a warm iron takes out creasing at the collar.
Searching for a black kimono for men? Our wrap front kimono jacket comes in black, and the range also includes crane embroidered, open front and side tie styles in navy, slate blue, burgundy and brown. For a red kimono, the black and red kimono carries a samurai helmet damask print, the cotton kimono jacket and the crane embroidered short kimono jacket both come in red, and the tied cardigan comes in burgundy. For a grey kimono, the short jacket, the tied cardigan, the cotton kimono jacket and the kimono coat all come in grey. If you want a green kimono jacket, the long haori coat comes in army green, with lighter options in white, beige and washed denim blue.
Measurements come from the manufacturer's flat size table for each garment, converted to centimetres and mapped onto one size ladder. Available for 8 of the 31 garments here, last checked 2026-11-03. How we measure.

Frequently asked questions
Is a kimono jacket the same as a kimono?
No. A kimono is a full-length wrapped robe. A kimono jacket keeps the straight body, wide sleeves and open or crossover front, cut short enough to wear over a tee.
Is a haori a kimono jacket?
Yes. A haori is the open jacket traditionally worn over a kimono, with the same straight body and wide sleeves. It is the most worn kimono jacket for men today, so our haori sit in this collection.
How should a men's kimono jacket fit?
Loose. Most pieces here are cut loose or relaxed, so take your usual size and check the chart on the product page. The Wrap Front Kimono Style Jacket is cut oversized.
Is a kimono cardigan the same as a kimono jacket?
Mostly. Kimono cardigan describes an open or tied kimono jacket worn loose over a tee. The Tied Kimono Cardigan is the clearest example here.
What is a men's kimono coat?
A longer or heavier kimono layer. Here that is the lined Kimono Coat, a hip-length wrap cardigan tied at the side, and the Long Haori Coat, which falls well below the hip.
How do I wash it?
Cotton pieces wash cold with like colours, no bleach, hung to dry. Check the label on the jacquard haori and the lined Kimono Coat first.
How long does delivery take?
Orders leave within 1 to 2 business days and usually arrive 5 to 9 business days after dispatch, with tracking. Shipping is free over $45, and returns are open for 30 days from delivery.
Do you have plus size kimono jackets?
Amaji's kimono jackets go up to XXL, and only some styles reach that size. The Men's Summer Haori Jacket and the Men's Tied Kimono Cardigan come in XS to XXL, and the Men's Crane Embroidered Kimono Jacket in XXS to XL. We don't stock anything above XXL. A kimono jacket has an open front and a straight, loose body, so it gives more room than a fitted jacket. Check your chest measurement against the size chart on the product page.
Do you ship to my country, and how much is it?
We ship to 33 countries: the 27 EU member states, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, Canada and the United States. Shipping is $7.90 USD to the US and Canada and $9.90 USD to Europe and Australia, free on orders over $45 USD, and you pay in your own currency at checkout. Duties and import fees, where they apply, are paid by the customer.
Can I return my order?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery if it is unworn and still tagged. EU customers also have the 14-day right of withdrawal. Return shipping is paid by you unless the item arrived faulty, damaged or wrong.
Is Amaji a Japanese brand?
No. Amaji is an online store for Japanese-style clothing with a US business address in New Castle, Delaware, and our kimono jackets are made in China in traditional Japanese cuts.
Is it OK to wear a kimono jacket if I am not Japanese?
Yes. A kimono jacket is a modern everyday jacket in a kimono cut, not a kimono, so it reads as clothing rather than costume on anyone. Wear it open over a tee or a shirt.
