Choosing a haori

What is a haori jacket?

A haori is a Japanese jacket worn open over a kimono, with a straight body, wide sleeves and a collar band running down both fronts. It began as menswear and later became formal dress, held loosely at the chest by a cord. Worn without a kimono, a haori is a light open layer that goes over a tee or a shirt. A haori differs from a noragi, which crosses over and ties shut, and from a hanten, which is padded for winter. Amaji sells twenty-one haori jackets from £19, including long, summer, cotton and printed haori, in sizes XXS to 2XL, with chest measurements of 126 to 134 cm and body lengths of 78.5 to 82 cm. Fabrics on file run from polyester to cotton and cotton linen. Orders ship to 33 countries, free over $45 USD, with returns within 30 days of delivery.

What a haori is

A haori is the Japanese jacket worn open over a kimono, first as menswear and later as formal dress; the haori jacket guide explains the cut and the cords. Take the kimono away and it becomes a straight, light jacket that goes over a tee or a shirt.

A Japanese haori is a short kimono jacket worn open over other clothes, and every Japanese haori jacket here is cut that way.

Long, summer and cotton haori

The Long Haori Coat is the long cut and the green haori of the range, worn open like the rest, in a cotton blend in black, army green or navy, XS to XL.

The Summer Haori Jacket is the light one, a polyester weave in black, white, blue, light grey or dark grey, XS to XXL.

The Open-Front Cotton Haori is cut the way the original was: a straight body, a collar band down both fronts and nothing to fasten, in grey cotton, XS to XXL.

The Southwestern Jacquard Haori Jacket is the heavy one, a winter haori. A thick cotton jacquard is woven with diamonds and bands, and the front crosses over and ties with a single cord, in blue or grey, XS and S.

The Reversible Textured Haori Jacket is a short haori cardigan with a shawl collar, a waist tie and two patch pockets, in a crinkled cotton linen that can be worn either side out, grey, XS to L.

Printed haori

The printed haori are the loud end of our haori clothing, light polyester jackets with the design across the back and fronts, three-quarter sleeves and an open front. For a plain colour with one detail, the black haori has a gold wave along the hem, the white haori carries an ink samurai, and the blue haori is navy with a white paisley pattern. For a haori design that fills the back, there is a dragon haori with a blue and gold dragon, a dragon kimono with dragons on the sleeves, a tiger kimono, a crane kimono with white cranes, a sakura kimono with cherry blossoms, a samurai kimono under a red moon.

More pictures on the same cut: a kitsune kimono with a fox mask and red sakura, a koi kimono, a hannya kimono in pale teal, a wave kimono with great wave crests, an ukiyo-e kimono with lucky cats and daruma, a red kimono in deep red damask and a black kimono jacket with a grey crane and moon.

Haori or happi coat

A happi is the festival cousin of the haori: straight sleeves, a printed collar band and a crest or kanji on the back, worn at matsuri. The happi coat is red with a checked hem and the happi jacket is the same cut in blue.

Haori, noragi or kimono jacket

A haori is the formal short overlayer, the haori jacket men wore over a kimono. A noragi is the tied work jacket of farmers. A men's kimono jacket is a modern everyday layer that borrows from both. If you want structure, the haori; if you want something worn in, the noragi. If you want the embroidery to be the point, the sukajan.

Fit and what to wear it with

Every men's haori jacket here is cut straight through the body with a dropped shoulder, and worn open. Take your usual size, or one up to wear it over a sweater. Over a plain tee and Japanese pants it reads as intended; over a shirt and straight trousers it replaces a light blazer.

Haori for men, and what to look for

Haori men wear today split into two groups. The printed haori kimono jacket, in fox, crane, koi, dragon or wave prints, is the statement piece. The plain ones are for every day: the summer haori, the modern cotton haori and the long haori coat. Mens haori run straight and loose, so take your usual size. A long black haori, or the black haori with a wave hem, goes with almost anything already in a wardrobe.

Care

The long coat and the summer haori machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang to dry. For the cotton ones and the printed haori, follow the care label sewn into the jacket. The best haori jackets for men compares prices across shops.

Measurements come from the manufacturer's flat size table for each garment, converted to centimetres and mapped onto one size ladder. Available for 3 of the 21 garments here, last checked 2026-11-03. How we measure.

Frequently asked questions

Can you wear a haori without a kimono?

Yes, and most people now do. Over a tee or a shirt with straight or wide trousers it works as a light jacket.

What is a haori coat?

Haori coat is another name for the haori: a straight, wide-sleeved coat worn open, with a collar band running down both fronts. Most stop at the hip. The Long Haori Coat falls below it.

Do you have a black haori?

Yes. The black haori has a gold wave print along the hem and sleeves, and the Long Haori Coat and the Summer Haori Jacket both come in plain black. For a picture on the back in black, see the dragon haori, the samurai kimono or the black kimono jacket.

Is there a long haori?

Yes. The Long Haori Coat is the long cut here and is worn open like the others. The rest are shorter jackets; each product page lists the length from the supplier’s chart.

Is a haori jacket menswear?

It started as menswear. Every haori here is cut for men, straight through the body with a dropped shoulder, and is worn open over everyday clothes rather than over a kimono.

How should a haori fit?

Loose and open. It falls to the hip or upper thigh and hangs open over a tee or shirt. Take your usual size, or one size up to layer it over a sweater; each product page lists the measurements.

What is the difference between a haori and a happi coat?

A haori is the everyday or formal overlayer with wide sleeves. A happi is the festival jacket, with straight sleeves, a printed collar band and a crest or kanji on the back, worn at matsuri.

What is the difference between a haori and a kimono jacket?

Kimono jacket is the English name for the same loose, wide-sleeved cut. A haori is traditionally the short jacket worn over a kimono, so the two words describe very similar jackets.

How do I wash a haori?

The Long Haori Coat, the Summer Haori Jacket and the printed haori machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang to dry. For the cotton and cotton linen haori, follow the care label sewn into the jacket.

How long does delivery take?

Orders leave within 1 to 2 business days and usually arrive 5 to 9 business days after dispatch, with tracking. Shipping is free over $45, and returns are open for 30 days from delivery.

Do you ship to my country, and how much is it?

We ship to 33 countries: the 27 EU member states, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, Canada and the United States. Shipping is $7.90 USD to the US and Canada and $9.90 USD to Europe and Australia, free on orders over $45 USD, and you pay in your own currency at checkout. Duties and import fees, where they apply, are paid by the customer.

Can I return my order?

Yes, within 30 days of delivery if it is unworn and still tagged. EU customers also have the 14-day right of withdrawal. Return shipping is paid by you unless the item arrived faulty, damaged or wrong.

Is Amaji a Japanese brand?

No. Amaji is an online store for Japanese-style clothing with a US business address in New Castle, Delaware, and our haori are made in China in traditional Japanese cuts.

Is it OK to wear a haori if I am not Japanese?

Yes. These are everyday jackets in a haori cut, not ceremonial dress, so they read as clothing rather than costume on anyone. Wear one open, like an overshirt or a light cardigan.
