The padded jacket of the Japanese winter

Japanese houses are cold in January. Central heating is rare in older homes, so families pull a padded hanten over their home clothes after dinner and keep it on until bed, the way other countries reach for a cardigan. It is hip length. The collar band crosses at the front and closes with a short tie.

Three hanten, three weights of winter

The Padded Hanten Jacket takes the house jacket outdoors. Its shell is ripstop polyester over cotton padding, in black or army green. Sizes run XS to L, with a chest of 126 cm on XS and 138 cm on L, and a length of 71 to 77 cm.

The Koi Hanten Jacket and the Seigaiha Hanten Jacket keep the traditional cotton. Each has a cotton shell, acrylic wadding and a polyester lining. The koi carries two carp leaping from a wave across the back. The seigaiha is printed all over with overlapping waves. Both are one size, $39.90.

Sizing a hanten

Hanten are cut loose. They sit over a sweater without pulling across the back, and the sleeves stop short of the wrist so they stay out of the way at the table or the sink. Take your usual size in the ripstop hanten. The printed ones are one size and fit most men up to a large.

Hanten, haori and dotera

A haori is the dressier open layer, unpadded and worn over a kimono. A dotera is the long padded robe that inns lay out in winter. The hanten sits between them. Short, warm, easy to move in. The full comparison is in our guide to the hanten.

For the farm jacket of the same family, see noragi. Every traditional cut is in Japanese jackets. Wash cold on a gentle cycle and dry flat so the padding stays even.

Measurements come from the manufacturer's flat size table for each garment, converted to centimetres and mapped onto one size ladder. Available for 3 of the 3 garments here, last checked 2026-10-15. How we measure.
