Menswear essentials, one plain piece at a time

What goes in a set of menswear essentials

A set of menswear essentials is short. One light jacket, one warm one, two or three knits, a good pair of trousers and something for the weekend. Every piece here was chosen to wear with every other piece.

Colours stay plain. Black, navy, charcoal, oat and brown do most of the work. Nothing carries a logo.

Jackets and coats

For the in-between months, the coaches jacket, the drizzler and the stretch travel jacket cover it, each one a light polyester shell with a full zip or snap front that layers over a shirt or a thin knit without bulk. The bombers sit shorter. Both finish on a rib-knit hem.

For cold weather the wool zip jacket is 100% double-faced wool. The single-breasted topcoat falls to the knee. The rest of the range sits in men's jackets.

Knits and shirts

Knitwear does the layering. There is a shawl collar cardigan, a chunky ribbed cardigan, a henley sweater, a crew in a heathered rib and a Fair Isle yoke for colder days. Most are soft polyester or acrylic blends, so they wash cold and dry flat.

The textured stripe shirt is the one woven piece. It goes under any of the knits. More knitwear is in sweaters.

Trousers and jeans

Trousers carry the outfit. Start there. The drawstring chinos are 100% cotton twill on an elasticated waist. The nylon cargo pants are 100% nylon with drawcord hems.

Three pleated wide-leg pairs cover the dressier end. There are pinstripe trousers, belted drape trousers and wide suit trousers. Light wash baggy jeans and pleated sweatpants finish it. Every cut is also in men's pants.

Choosing a size

Sizes run XXS to XXL depending on the piece. Every product page carries the supplier's own chart in centimetres. Most jackets and knits are cut relaxed, with dropped shoulders. Take your usual size, or size down for a closer fit. Trousers list the waist and hip in cm. Compare them with a pair you already own before you order.
