Men's Wrap-Front Samue Set

Samue cut: crossover toggle top and full lined balloon trousers with a drawstring.

A samue is the work set of Japanese Zen monks. Temple chores, sweeping and gardening were done in it, so it was made to move. Today it is worn at home, in workshops and in the garden across Japan.

Ours pairs a long-sleeve top that crosses over at the chest and fastens with a toggle, with lined balloon trousers gathered at the hem. Buy the top, the trousers, or the full set.

Size

One size for both pieces. The top measures 130 cm around the chest, 77 cm long, with a 58 cm shoulder and a 57 cm sleeve. The trousers have a drawstring waist from 58 to 120 cm, a 280 cm hip and an 88 cm length. Our model is 187 cm.

Fabric and care

Both pieces are 80% polyester and 20% cotton. The trousers are lined. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, or hand wash cold. Hang to dry.

How to wear it

Wear the set as it was meant: at home, on a slow weekend, with sandals. The top also works alone over wide trousers. The balloon trousers pair with a plain tee for errands.

Monks needed clothing they could kneel, squat and carry water in for hours without anything binding at the waist or the shoulder, and that brief still shapes the cut: a wrap top with no buttons to catch and trousers with room to sit. It still works.
