Loose, hip-length body with a dropped shoulder and wide three quarter sleeves.
This modern haori is cut the way the original was. A straight body, a collar band running down both fronts, and nothing to fasten. It hangs open over whatever is underneath, a tee, a shirt or a light knit.
What makes it modern is the cloth and the occasion, not the shape: a light, textured grey cotton meant for warm city days, not ceremony, and a fit loose enough to throw over everyday clothes without thinking about it. Hip length. A dropped shoulder. Wide three quarter sleeves.
Fit and sizing
Sizes run XS to XXL. The fit is loose and hip length. Our model is 187 cm and wears M. The size guide gives garment measurements, hand-measured, with the chest as the full circumference. Allow up to 3 cm.
Fabric and care
Light, textured cotton for warm days. Hand wash cold, inside out and apart from other colours. No bleach. Hang to dry out of direct sun so the grey stays even.
How to wear it
A haori is a layer, so treat it like an open overshirt. Over a white tee with wide trousers it looks relaxed. Over a black tee and black trousers it looks sharp. Sleeves at three quarter length leave the wrist free. Sandals or plain trainers finish it.
What separates a haori from a noragi? A haori hangs open with nothing to fasten. A noragi crosses over and ties shut at the waist. Both started as practical clothing and became everyday layers.
Pairs well with the monpe balloon pants and the miyabi men's corduroy pants. Also in the same family: the reversible textured haori jacket.
Read our haori jacket guide for the history and how to wear one. More open-front cuts sit in haori, and the wider family in Japanese jackets.
