A Japanese samue is the work set of temple life: a crossover top that ties at the side and loose pants. This set is 95% cotton, with 3/4 sleeves and cropped drawstring pants. It is made to move in and to lounge in.
Zen monks wear the samue for their daily chores, sweeping, gardening and cooking, so it is designed to let the body bend, kneel and reach without restriction, and that same freedom of movement is why craftsmen, potters and people who work from home have adopted it as everyday clothing. Simple. Free.
Fit and sizing
Loose. The chest measures 111 cm at XS, 121 cm at M and 136 cm at XXL. Pants lengths run 85 to 87 cm. The supplier says the set runs one size large. Our model is 187 cm and wears M.
Fabric and care
95% cotton, 5% other fibres. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, or hand wash cold. Hang to dry.
Colours
White, blue, black and grey.
How to wear it
As a set at home, in the workshop or in the garden. The top alone over jeans.

The crossover top ties at the side and stays put when you bend or kneel. The cropped pants keep the hem clear of the floor, so the set works for gardening, cooking or yoga as well as lounging. Wear the top alone over jeans for a lighter Japanese touch.
