What the numbers say

  • Haori and kimono jackets are the cheapest way in. Half of all listings sit between $46.90 and $68.37 for a haori, and $46.90 to $53.40 for a kimono jacket. The expensive end is formal crested haori sold as a set with a kimono.
  • Hakama prices split into three markets. Fashion hakama pants cluster at $60 to $75 (Marlow Reed, Japan Zone, Techwear Official, Eiyo Kimono). Training hakama for kendo and aikido sit at $146 to $175 (Seido, Tozando). Formal silk hakama from Maruhisa USA have a median of $1,500. A single "average hakama price" hides all three.
  • A samue costs more than a jinbei. The median samue is $109 against $76 for a jinbei. A samue has long sleeves and long trousers, and the made-in-Japan cotton sets pull the median up.
  • Sukajan has the widest spread. Store medians run from $24.95 at Japan Zone to $505 at Kiriko Made.
  • Tabi socks are cheap everywhere. The middle half is $12 to $30.

Our garments are made by manufacturing partners in China, mostly in cotton or polyester-cotton blends. Several stores in this survey sell pieces made in Japan, often in Kurume cotton or silk, and that accounts for much of the difference at the top of each range. For where to buy each garment, see the guides to hakama, jinbei, samue, haori, sukajan and tabi socks.

Method

  • Stores. Eiyo Kimono, Japan Avenue, Kimonoji, KimuraKami, Kiriko Made, Maruhisa USA, Pacific West Kimono, Seapoom, Seido, Japan Objects, Japan Zone, Tabio USA, Techwear Official, Tozando, Marlow Reed. These are the specialist shops that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot and Google AI Mode cited when we asked them where to buy Japanese garments in September 2026, plus the shops ranking for the same searches.
  • Data. Each store's public product catalogue, read on 29 September 2026. A listing counts once, at its lowest in-stock price.
  • Currency. Only stores that price in US dollars are included, so no exchange rate is assumed. Each store's catalogue price was checked against the price its product page serves.
  • What is counted. Men's and unisex garments whose title names the garment. Women's and children's items, vintage and collector pieces, fabric samples, parts, alterations and accessories are excluded. Japonista was excluded because its stock is vintage.
  • Garment matching is by title, so a listing called "kimono jacket" counts as a kimono jacket even if the shop's own category differs. Noragi had too few listings outside Japan-priced stores to report.
