Short answer: a samue is the work set of Japanese Zen monks, a crossover jacket and loose trousers, and it is now sold widely as loungewear. A cotton or cotton-polyester samue costs about $69 to $90 online, one made in Japan $109 to $200, and a hand-woven sashiko samue $400 and up. Decide first whether you want it for work, for lounging or as a gift, because that decides the fabric.
We sell a samue, so this guide is written by a seller. It names the other shops worth looking at, with the prices on their own pages on 29 September 2026, and says plainly where ours is not the right choice.
What a samue is
A samue (作務衣) takes its name from samu, the physical work Zen monks do around the temple: sweeping, gardening, cleaning. The jacket crosses over at the chest and closes with ties, the trousers are loose with an elastic or tied waist and gathered ankles, and the whole set is made to move in. Potters, carpenters and chefs adopted it, and in Japan it is a common thing to wear around the house. Unlike the summer jinbei, it has long sleeves and long trousers and is worn all year.

How to choose a samue
- Fabric. Cotton, and especially Kurume cotton or double gauze, is the most comfortable to lounge in. Polyester-cotton blends wash and dry fastest and crease less, which is why temple and work samue use them.
- Sizing. Japanese shops size by height. M is usually 165 to 175 cm and LL 175 to 185 cm. If you are over 185 cm, look for 3L or a one-size set with a wide waist range.
- Trousers. Work samue gather or tie at the ankle so they stay out of the way. Loungewear samue are often straight.
- Weight. Sashiko and denim samue are warm enough for winter. Gauze and chijimi are for summer.
