Why people call them samurai pants
Search for samurai pants and you are looking for a hakama, the wide pleated trouser that samurai wore over a kimono for riding, walking, kneeling and formal ceremony for several hundred years. Kendo players still train in them. The name stuck.
Wrap fronts, pleats and ties
Every pair here keeps the kendo outline. A pleated panel crosses the front. The legs are wide and straight. A tie or belt closes the waist.
The Men’s Dark Cotton Hakama Pants are our best seller. A wrap panel crosses the front over a wide cotton leg with long side ties. The Pleated Samurai Hakama wraps the same way in polyester and stops just above the ankle.
The Kendo Samurai Trousers sew the panel in place over a trouser with belt loops. They go on like tailoring. The Cotton Kendo Hakama is the closest to the dojo original. It is 100% cotton with seven deep pleats and long ties, in black, white or navy.
Choosing your size
These pairs come in sizes, from XS to XL, and the kendo hakama goes down to XXS. Take your usual size. Because the tie sets the waist to the centimetre, the measurement that decides the fit is the length from waist to hem, so check that number on the supplier’s chart on each product page before you order.
Wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang dry. The pleats hold best when the pair dries flat on the line.
Where samurai pants sit in the range
For every hakama shape, from belted A-lines to the widest pleats, go to hakama pants. The fashion cuts without the kendo panel are in modern hakama pants. For a matching top, hakama sets pairs them with kimono shirts and haori. The wider Japanese range is in Japanese pants.

Frequently asked questions
What are samurai pants called?
Hakama. They are wide pleated trousers worn over a kimono in Japan, and kendo, iaido and aikido still use them. Samurai pants is the everyday name for the same shape.
Can I wear samurai pants every day?
Yes. The wrap-front and kendo-cut pairs here are made for daily wear. The cotton pair and the kendo trousers suit a plain tee or a fitted knit.
Do samurai pants run large?
The legs are cut wide on purpose, but the waist follows the size chart. Take your usual size. The tie lets you set the waist exactly.
