What Japanese men wear at home

What Japanese men wear at home

In Japan, the clothes you wear at home have their own names, and most men own at least one of the three below for summer nights, slow weekends and the hour after a bath. On hot nights it is the jinbei. Its short top crosses over and ties at the side, and the shorts match. For chores and slow weekends it is the samue, a tied top with loose trousers. After the bath it is a light robe.

All of them are cut loose. You can sleep in every piece here.

The sets and the robe

There are nine pieces in this collection.

The jinbei come in four cloths. The Men’s Cotton Jinbei Set is 100% cotton at 190 g per square metre and runs XS to XXL. The Seigaiha Wave Jinbei Set is double-layer cotton gauze. The Jacquard Jinbei Set is 99% cotton, and the Modal Jinbei Set is a soft stretch blend.

The Cross-Tie Samue Set is 95% cotton with 3/4 sleeves and cropped drawstring trousers, XS to XXL. The Seigaiha Cotton Gauze Samue Set is the one made for sleeping in. Its XS fits men from 170 to 175 cm.

For after the bath there is the Men’s Cotton Gauze Kimono Robe. It wraps at the front and closes with a tie belt.

Gauze, cotton or modal

Pick the cloth by the season. Double-layer gauze is the lightest of the three and dries fastest, mid-weight cotton feels like a good heavy tee, and modal drapes and stays cool against the skin on humid nights.

Machine wash cold and hang to dry. Gauze crinkles by design. Nothing here needs ironing.

Sizing loose sets

Take your usual size. These sets are cut loose on purpose, so sizing down makes them look like a uniform. Each product page lists the chest and length from the supplier’s size chart.

To see each garment on its own, browse jinbei sets and samue sets. For a crossed collar you wear out of the house, try haori jackets or men’s kimono jackets. The kimono robe guide covers robes in more depth.

Le misure vengono dalla tabella del produttore per ogni capo, convertite in centimetri e riportate su un'unica scala di taglie. Disponibili per 7 capi su 9 in questa pagina, ultimo controllo 2026-10-21. Come misuriamo.

Domande frequenti

Can you sleep in a jinbei?

Yes. In Japan the jinbei is summer homewear, and plenty of men sleep in it. The gauze and cotton sets here are light enough for warm nights.

What are Japanese pajamas called?

There is no single word. Men lounge and sleep in a jinbei in summer and a samue or a light robe the rest of the year. Japanese hotels hand out a cotton yukata for the same job.

What is the difference between loungewear jinbei and samue?

A jinbei has short sleeves and shorts and is made for heat. A samue has longer sleeves and full or cropped trousers, so it works in every season.

How do I wash cotton gauze?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and hang it to dry. Gauze is meant to look crinkled, so it needs no ironing.
