Hakama Pants, in detail
What are wrap-front hakama pants?
Wrap-front hakama pants are everyday Japanese-style trousers with a layered panel that crosses the front and falls in uneven points over a wide, ankle-length leg. From some angles they read as a skirt, from others as a wide trouser. The overlapping front comes from the hakama, the trousers samurai wore over the kimono and that kendo and aikido students still wear. This pair is cut for daily wear, not the dojo: it closes with a button and belt loops like ordinary trousers, and a braided cord with small tassels hangs from the waistband. The fabric is 100% polyester, not cotton, with a fine crepe texture and no stretch. They are unisex, in black, sized XS to XL by height and weight, from XS for 160 to 165 cm and 50 to 58 kg up to XL for 180 to 188 cm and 80 to 88 kg. Orders ship to 33 countries, free over $45 USD, with returns within 30 days of delivery.
Where the shape comes from
The hakama is the wide, pleated trouser of Japanese formal dress and of the martial arts. Samurai wore it over the kimono, and it is still worn today for kendo, aikido and ceremonies.
Its most recognisable detail is the overlapping front. This pair keeps it and leaves out what made the original hard to live in: the long tying routine and the stiff back.
How it is cut
A layered panel crosses the front and falls in uneven points over a wide leg that runs to the ankle. From some angles it reads as a skirt, from others as a wide trouser, and it moves between the two as you walk.
It closes with a button and belt loops, like ordinary trousers, and a braided cord with small tassels hangs from the waistband. It is cut unisex and sized XS to XL.
Fabric and care
100% polyester with a fine crepe texture and no stretch, so the panels keep their drape.
Hand wash cold, hang to dry and iron on low heat.
How to wear it
Keep the top fitted and let the legs carry the volume. A close black tee and boots is the simplest version.
Under an open noragi or haori it reads as a full outfit; a white shirt gives the most contrast against the black.
Choosing your size
The maker sizes this pair by the body, not by garment measurements: XS for 160 to 165 cm and 50 to 58 kg, S for 165 to 170 cm and 58 to 65 kg, M for 170 to 175 cm and 65 to 73 kg, L for 175 to 180 cm and 73 to 80 kg, XL for 180 to 188 cm and 80 to 88 kg.
Choose by height first: nothing changes the length. MySize Assist, above, uses these same ranges.
Frequently asked questions
Are these hakama pants for men or women?
Both. They are cut unisex: the same black pair, sized XS to XL. Our hakama pants for women guide has a size chart by height and weight.
What size should I order?
Your usual size, from XS to XL. Choose by height first, then weight: each size is listed with its height and weight range on the size chart.
What are they made of?
100% polyester with a fine crepe texture and no stretch. It holds the drape of the layered front panel and dries quickly.
How long does delivery take?
Orders leave within 1 to 3 business days, and delivery usually takes 5 to 9 business days after dispatch. You get a tracking link by email as soon as your order ships.
Where do they ship from?
They are made in China and shipped from our partner warehouse to 33 countries: the EU, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway, Australia, Canada and the United States.
How much is shipping?
Free on orders over $45. Below that a flat shipping fee applies, shown in your currency at checkout. Customs duties, where they apply, are paid by the customer.
Is there a discount on two pairs?
Yes. Two or more pairs take an automatic multi-buy discount in the cart, and two pairs clear the free-shipping line.
Can I return them?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery if they are unworn, unwashed and tagged. Email contact@amajiclothing.com with your order number. Return shipping is on you, unless the pair arrived faulty or wrong.
Will they arrive before Christmas?
Order by November 30 for delivery before Christmas.
How do I wash them?
They are 100% polyester. Hand wash cold, do not wring, hang to dry and iron on low heat.
Can I wear them casually, not for martial arts?
Yes, that is what this pair is cut for. It keeps the overlapping front of a hakama but closes with a button and belt loops instead of the long straps and stiff back board of a martial arts hakama, so it wears like a wide trouser with a T-shirt, knit or jacket.
Is it OK to wear hakama pants if I am not Japanese?
Yes. These are everyday trousers in a hakama cut, the kind Japanese brands such as Muji sell for daily wear, not ceremonial dress, so they read as clothing rather than costume on anyone. Wear them as you would any wide-leg trouser.
Is Amaji a Japanese brand?
No. Amaji is an online store for Japanese-style clothing with a US business address in New Castle, Delaware, and our pairs are made in China in traditional Japanese cuts. If you want hakama pants from a Japanese brand, Muji's are $79.90 on muji.us (16 October 2026).
