Relaxed through the chest and sleeve, with a ribbed hem.

A souvenir jacket in the Yokosuka tradition of Japan. Raijin, the thunder god, is embroidered across the back inside his ring of taiko drums. The bomber shape carries a ribbed collar, ribbed cuffs and a ribbed hem.

Raijin is one of the most recognisable figures in Japanese art, drumming up storms from the clouds, and placing him across the back of a souvenir jacket follows a tradition that started when the first sukajan were stitched for visitors to the port of Yokosuka in the late 1940s. Matte. Dark. Powerful.

Two versions

Black is the unlined shell. Black Padded adds a wadded lining for colder weather. Pick the padded one if you want it as your main winter jacket.

Fit and sizing

Relaxed through the chest and sleeve, with a ribbed hem. Sizes run XS to XL. Our model is 188 cm and wears M. The supplier publishes no measurement chart for this piece.

Fabric and care

Polyester with a matte shell. Zip front and welt pockets. Follow the care label, and wash it inside out to protect the embroidery.

How to wear it

Wear it over a grey hoodie in winter or a white tee in spring. Dark trousers keep the focus on the back.

The matte shell sets this one apart from the shiny satin most people picture on a sukajan. It reads more like a workwear bomber and fits everyday outfits more easily, while the embroidery on the back keeps the souvenir spirit.

Pairs well with the monpe balloon pants and the wrap-front samue set. Also in the same family: the crane embroidered kimono jacket.

Read our sukajan jacket guide for the history. More designs sit in sukajan jackets, and the wider family in Japanese jackets.
