Kotona Men's Cropped Trousers in 100% Cotton, high water pants

High Water Pants: What They Are and How Men Wear Them

High water pants are trousers whose hem stops above the ankle, so a strip of sock or skin shows between the pant and the shoe. The name is an old joke: pants that short look ready for a flood. These days the length is usually on purpose, and several of the cropped and tapered cuts in our Japanese baggy pants collection are made to end right there.

You will see it spelled high waters, highwater pants or high water trousers. All of them mean the same length.

What are high waters pants, and where did the name come from

For most of the twentieth century, "high waters" was a schoolyard tease. A kid grew two inches over the summer, the pants did not, and the hem now floated above his shoes. The idea was that he had dressed to wade through a flooded street. It meant hand-me-downs, or a parent who had not gone shopping yet.

The length came back as a choice. Cropped chinos, ankle trousers and the wide Japanese cuts sold in Tokyo menswear shops all finish at or above the ankle bone. Women had their own version for decades in capri pants, which stop around mid-calf.

What separates a deliberate high water from an accidental one is the rest of the cut. A slim pair that is simply too short looks outgrown. A pair with room in the leg and a clean hem near the ankle looks planned.

How high is a high water hem?

People use the words loosely, so here is how we sort lengths when customers ask.

Length Where the hem sits What shows
Full length Rests on the top of the shoe Nothing
Ankle or cropped At the ankle bone A little sock
High water Just above the ankle bone Sock and some lower leg
Capri or mid-calf Middle of the calf Most of the shin

The wider the leg, the higher the hem can go without looking like a mistake.

High water pants for men: the cuts that read as intentional

The easiest place to start is a straight cropped trouser. Amaji's Kotona Cropped Trousers ($64.90) have a roomy straight leg that ends short of the shoe, so the length looks designed rather than shrunk. They come in Black, Gray, Brown, Mocha and Cream, sizes XS to 3XL.

If you want something a little more relaxed, the Sekino Cropped Pants we sell at Amaji ($51.90) run XS to XL in Black, Gray, Apricot, Green and Brown. The earthier colors sit well with sneakers and bare ankles in warm months.

The second route is a harem cut. The extra cloth sits in the seat and thigh, the leg narrows lower down, and the hem stays clear of the shoe. That shape hides the "outgrown" look completely. Amaji's Gelyu Harem Pants ($41.90, XS to 3XL) showed up in 3 of our last 50 orders, and 2 of the 3 pieces ordered were size 2XL. So no, the look is not only for slim builds. The Shinbo Harem Pants ($46.90, XXS to 3XL) were in 1 of our last 50 orders and come in seven colors, from Black to Light Yellow.

The third route is workwear. Japanese scaffolders wear tobi (鳶) trousers, balloon legs that gather low so nothing catches on a ladder. Our Tobi Trousers ($48.90, one size, Black) give you that bunched, lifted hem. There is more on the cut in what are tobi pants.

All of these are affordable everyday pieces made in China. They are not tailored suit trousers, and if you need a crisp office crop with a pressed crease, a tailor working on a pair you already own is the better answer.

How to wear high water pants

The length puts your ankles on display, so everything near the floor matters more than usual.

  • Show the sock on purpose. A plain or textured sock fills the gap and looks chosen. Amaji's Grey Tabi Socks ($12.90) are split-toe tabi (足袋), and that small detail is exactly the kind of thing high waters are meant to show. See what are tabi socks.
  • Pick low shoes. Loafers, canvas sneakers, slip-ons and sandals all work. Tall boots fight the hem and make it look like the pants rode up.
  • Keep the top short. A boxy tee or a cropped jacket keeps the proportion balanced. A long coat over short pants cuts your legs off twice.
  • Go bare ankle in summer. No-show socks and low sneakers give the cleanest line.

One rule covers most outfits: if the leg is wide, the shoe can be chunky. If the leg is slim, keep the shoe slim too.

You do not have to buy a new pair to try the length. Roll a straight or wide pair twice, about the width of the cuff each time, and look in a full mirror with your shoes on. If you like it, a permanent hem is cheap; our guide on the average cost of hemming pants covers what tailors charge. Measure first with our note on where the inseam is.

Tall readers often end up in high waters by accident because standard inseams run short. If that is you, harem pants for tall men explains how to get the length you actually want, high or full.

The flood joke is old. A hem above the ankle, on a leg with some room, is just another length now.
